    I like it!

I can just imagine a nice tea in the Empress Hotel wearing it!

Honestly, though...how would you feel if someone said that about your tartan?

I'm beginning to agree with Jock Scott's post -- while I know Steve had no bad intentions with this thread, let's try not to dogpile too much.

Buchanan ancient is one that by itself, in a picture doesnt look fantastic, but when worn with other clothing etc actually looks pretty darned good. Hamish just got a buchanan ancient tartan kilt (#90 i think) and it looks great.

this picture shows the difference between ancient and weathered buchanan
Hamish's new kilt wasn't the ancient version

    I agree.

To me when it comes to tartans aesthetic considerations run a far distant second (or maybe third or fourth) to the meaning of the tartan, as determined by the identity it helps to establish. In fact it could be said that the meaning determines the aesthetic value, which is a superficial, ephermeral thing, shifting with passing notions of taste and fashionability. Does anyone remember the pink and black color combo of the late 50's and early 60's? the electric acid colors of the late 60's and early 70's?

    My candidate for ugliest tartan

One of the ugliest tartans I have come across is this district tartan:-

    http://www.tartans.scotland.net/tart...an_id=2619.htm

I don’t know anyone from Devon who uses this tartan. To me it is hideously garish and I wouldn’t be seen dead in it. In fact I wouldn’t even buy a tablecloth in it.

A much better district tartan for people from Devon is this one in my opinion:-

    http://www.tartans.scotland.net/tart...tan_id=318.htm

    What do others think?

    Rob
