Possibly the World's ugliest Tartan

I say beauty is relative. The intro description to it has readers pre-disposed to think of it as ugly (if not The Ugliest). So, some may like it and others may not; just like some find using suspenders (braces) okay and others think it abhorrent.

The Tartan pattern, in general, regardless of color combination is a beautiful thing to me.

Edith and Alec Armstrong have looms set up on their West Bay Marina houseboat and use Angora Wool from their farm in the middle of Vancouver Island blended with Mohair.

So, mohair comes from Angora goats. Angora Wool can be either of two things: Mohair, or the hair from Angora rabbits. Neither of these fiber types would make a good kilting fabric. The fiber from the rabbit tends to be fuzzy and fly-away like and the mohair is straight and slippery. Mohair does have a nice sheen - kind of like the sheen you get if you iron a non-wool kilt without a press cloth.

You are absolutely correct that sentence should have read,

"They use Wool blended with Angora Mohair from their farm in the middle of Vancouver Island."

Speaking as a British Columbian by birth, that tartan is hideous; at the very least, it needs to be primarily green, for the abundant forests in the province.

Victoria, British Columbia is an attractive city with a major focal point being the elegant Empress Hotel overlooking the adjoining bay and dockage for cruise ships. Most probably the dowager matrons would appreciate this tartan for potential in draperies, table cloths and shawls. Hides stains and dust well.

I dunno. I kinda like it. Actually, I knida like all of these tartans.

I'm thinking a kilt in the Victoria tartan, with a neon green t-shirt under an unbuttoned aloha shirt, and a Modern Buchanan tie, perhaps with Loud MacLeod hose.

(The scary thing is, I'd probably wear an outfit like that )

I'm not fond of any of the official American tartans. At the risk of sounding unpatriotic, red white and blue make for a very boring tartan.

However, I'm inclined to agree that the Victoria, BC tartan may be slightly worse.

Grant: I can't quite picture you in a tartan thong. No offense, but I'd like to keep my mind's eye safe from that mental picture. But if you are going to wear a tartan thong, perhaps another tartan would make you feel, well, tartier?

It is a case of using all the wrong colours for all the right reasons.

Selecting a handful of unconnected colours because each one is somehow thought to connect to the state, country or region, and then just putting them together with no regard for the colours being harmonious, the amounts of each colour making a balanced overall effect, and making the stripes and bands outside the normal rules of tartans - it is just never going to work.

I really am sufficiently sensitive to colours to feel ill, or experience a physical shock if I come across a 'bad' combination suddenly.

I have tried to find out why some patterns and colours feel good and others bad, but never got a sensible explaination.
