    Edinburgh Military Tattoo

I'm planning a trip to Scotland next year (first tieme), and I've always wanted to attend the Military Tattoo in Edinburgh. I usually like to travel "off season" to avoid the huge tourist crush (it's also easier on the wallet), but the Tattoo takes place during the high tourist month, so crowds come with the turf. I'd appreciate hearing the experiences of anyone who has attended the tattoo and any thoughts or advice you might have. Did you go kilted?

Also, a general question. As a kilted Yank strolling into a Scottish Pub and ordering a pint in his best New Yawk accent, what kind of reception would that generate? I suppose the Barman might think "OMG another bloody tourist dressed in a kilt!"

I would advise you to get your ticket early for the Tattoo - they sell out very quickly. Travel companies buy them up in bulk.
I wouldn't worry about wearing your kilt, barmen in Edinburgh are used to seeing just about everything, particularly during the Festival in August. And don't worry about the locals either, they will probably be wishing they had worn theirs. Sadly, like any large city, there are bound to be a few "low-lifes" about who might make a comment but that is more likely if they hear an English accent rather than an American one.

The only time I've ever had anyone say anything negative about me about wearing a kilt in Scotland was in the VisitScotland local office in Dumfries. That was taken care of in fairly short order and if I recall correctly the district MP got involved.

Who knows what some might have been thinking but they were never anything but pleasant and welcoming. In the pubs it's even better - they see the kilt and they notice. They hear the accent and they come up and start a conversation. Just wear it like you know what you are doing and don't do handstands or drool on people and you'll be fine.

In 2007 my wife and I went on a tour of Scotland with the CIE company. It included 2 days in Edinburgh and the Military Tattoo. We stayed in a hotel at the bottom of the Royal Mile and the evening of the Tattoo, we walked uphill toward the Castle. Along the way we were joined by hundreds of others converging on the site. We all had to go through a security checkpoint. I was wearing a Hay Tartan kilt, Argyll Jacket and balmoral bonnet. Never an unkind word from anyone in the crowd. There were a few others kilted also.
Unfortunately, the evening was very cool and windy. Threatening to rain. Difficult to enjoy the program, but it was an experience I will remember. Thank goodness for several layers of wool. My wife had brought along her winter coat. I wore kilts every day of the 5 days. Most of the tour group were Americans, and I got into some great conversations with many of them.

I say go and enjoy the experience kilted.

Man, I've been wanting to attend the Tattoo for several years now. Be sure and post some pictures when you return for the rest of us to enjoy.

I've never been, but it is known to be great. Usually gets televised at some point. Just look out for the tickets going on sale for next year.

My wife and I attended the Tattoo in 2000. It was awesome and we still talk about it. The grand finale was every piper from all the groups represented marching into the arena in formation playing "Scotland the Brave". There were hundreds of pipers and they were all the best from their various countries. It's one of those moments you wish you could capture somehow, but you know that no recording will ever do it justice.
