There's a little tool that you can use that has what I can only describe as a groove/lip on the edge, and if you rub it against the leather when slightly damp it will smooth the edges and give it somewhat of a slick look. Not sure what the tool's called, only used it once to make a canteen strap under supervision from someone who had done it before.
