Yes he did! It is the operation Iraqi Freedom tartan...
I found the image at scotweb...
I like the idea of various tartans based upon campaign service ribbons. It would certainly be a niche within a niche though.
"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

I think it is a great idea..being a DS vet myself, I would be interested. Don't know about registering the tartan, but it might make sense to contact one of our wonderful vendors here to see if they feel they would have enough demand to help back the production, and then sell it exclusively?

Love it! I'm a Desert Shield/Storm vet as well as "Operation Just Cause" (Panama). (other jungle fun as well) Hmm for a "Panama" kilt it would HAVE to be dark and mossy---what kind of kilt is proper for a "Pre-dawn vertical insertion"? ;-)

I suppose generic "service tartans" are okay-- even if they do attract some wannabes, because they are ultimately fashion tartans without any solid military basis or foundation. But tartans based on the ribbons awarded for specific military campaigns?
No, I don't think so. People bled and died in these campaigns, and to demean their sacrifice by turning the ribbon of their campaign medal into a fashion tartan seems incredibly disrespectful of their service.
I'm sure others, less sensitive, will disagree.
You make some good points but I find it insulting that you think anyone who disagrees is automatically less sensitive.
If you were talking about wearing the actual service awards then I agree that is limited to the ones who earned them. But when you are talking about something that is designed to honor those people and their service, why should that be limited to a small group? Just because I didn't serve I'm not allowed to show my support?

ugh--people get riled up about a lot of things.
Here's my 2 cents--and its ONLY an opinion to take or leave:
I'm a veteran of the US Navy. I served 8 years and not being a ship-board OR "base-rat" sailor, but one assigned to small groups in central and south America from '83-'92 with a few other excursions--saw combat.
I'm proud to wear my Edzell tartan--and I'm proud to see others wear it. IF a tartan was made for a campaign I served in and others who didn't serve in that campagin wore it--to me, its the same as all those folks who aren't Clan members of mine wearing my Clan's tartan--I only ask that they respect it.
I see it as them honoring us.
Occasionally when I see someone wearing a misplaced uniform item--I'll ask them why they wear it and if they know what it is and what it means. I hope that this exchange will remind them to be respectful.
I figure I put my *** on the line for a country that believes in freedom. To me, that includes freedom to honor me and my fellows by wearing our colors. I only ask that they choose them mindfully and wear them out of respect.
Again--just an opinion--your mileage may vary ;-)

I have to go with MacMillan of Rathdown on this one. This same point of view was given before over cap badges of regiments. It was generaly agreed that if you didn't serve with them, you have no point wearing them. The same goes for medals. Most posters seemed to agree on that, but now that it's a tartan based on a ribbon, it is being suggested that "how dare you say I can't ware that". There are Masons here. How would they feel if non-Masons started to wear a Mason tartan made only for Masons, or wear Mason rings. The "I'm horroning them" stuff goes only so far. If people want to honnor vets, serving members, or any organization that they personaly do not belong to, they can do it by letting these people have their own personal symbols and find something else to wear!

I am also of the mind that if you weren't there then don't wear it! If you want to support a veteran display the flag properly. Volunteer at a VA medical center but don't wear my hard earned campaign ribbon. As far as the PSD tartan that doesn't symbolize those of us in the U S Armed Services that is for the private army types that made my job that much harder.
