The USAF Tartan kilt isn't part of any official air force uniform, so you wouldn't be violating any uniform laws. The medals are yours to wear. I don't know that I'd wear 'em on base. I might suggest the Blue Doublet with Gold trim that the USAFR pipe band wears. I'm asking the honor guard to buy mine. Do you play pipes? Maybe pulling honor guard enough would get the base to buy you 'proper attire.'

No, George, no pipes yet. Guess I will just have to go to the commanding officer of whichever unit is holding the ball(right now this is all theoretical), and request permission. Maybe suggesting where they could get one as well would be a great way to try and sell it! Hard to say though, with Space Command. They are rather rigid when it comes to regs. For those of you who don't quite see what I'm saying, imagine duty at the Pentagon. I have seen cases where common sense was not allowed to reign due to regs, and it can be maddening at times! Shoot, most of the time, junior enlisted call me sir; which to a damn proud E-7 who came from the Marines, that really chaps my kilted backside!

No American service includes the Kilt as an approved uniform item. However, it has occasionally been worn to service events. Your best bet is to look and see if civilian attire is permitted at the event... if it's strictly mess dress uniforms, don't go with the kilt. If it's mess dress or civilian black / white tie, then kilt it up, with a civilian doublet or PC. Check your uniform regulations for the Air Farce to see what the regulations on a serving member wearing mini medals with civilian formal dress is.

Well that explains the Marines shirt you were wearing in Elizabeth! (Just kidding- I'm not really that dense!)

So Birddog- to you and all the other veterans here, I say you should them with pride every chance you get. That gives people like me the opportunity to personally thank you for protecting the lives of my children. You will most likely never see them or meet them, but you put your lives on the line for them every day you're on active duty. For that, I am greatful. McVarmit, I would loved to have bought you a pint when I met you, but I was unfortunately otherwise engaged.

Your installation shouldn't have a problem with you wearing a kilt as long as you're not on duty. As for wearing your medals, I would treat your jacket as if you were wearing a tuxedo. As a senior NCO, you should have plenty of medals. Do you get to wear the blue space command jumpsuits?

I don't know who you are or where you're from McDougall, but demeaning any of our armed forces is not welcomed here.

George, Space Command switched to the same nomex green flight suits that fliers wear a few years back. So, I didn't need to get a bunch of new uniforms, other than to get rid of some hydraulic fluid stained ones!
McDougall, if you were making that comment in terms of inter service rivalry, you should point that out, as I have done when I rib my fellow servicemen and women. If not, then you'd do best to keep comments like that off of here.

Post note-McVarmit, you look damned sharp in that photo; hope I do just as much justice to my Leatherneck kilt as you do. Really like the balmoral crest as well.

I've seen this topic kicked around here several times now.

Isn't there some kind of official arbiter of protocol for these branches of the Armed Forces that can give you fellas a definitive answer? One would think that there must be someone at an official level who has the last word on what does and does not go with uniforms and the wearing of decorations.
