As this would be for a ball I would say it all depends on the formality of the event, however I would think you would want to go with the waistcoat. For our RSCDS Ball earlier this year known as the Tartan Ball held at the Royal York I and most other attendants wore the Prince Charlie outfit here is a picture of me from that night.

Of course there was one gent in a Montrose Doublet and next year I will wear mine.
