Instructions question
Now that I've gotten budget approval for a sewing machine, I'm going to begin making my own kilts. I'll start with contemporary and maybe someday work my way up to traditional.
Anyway, I've done lots of online searching for instructions and I keep seeing this website with strong recommendations; http://users.tinyonline.co.uk/chegc/kiltsite/page2.htm. The only trouble is that it doesn't seem to be working anymore. Does anyone know if this information is still available on another site, or has anyone had the foresight to save said information that they might be able to email it to me?
Otherwise, besides Alan's excellent X-kilt manual, which will be my first kilt, are there any other online instructions for contemporary kilts that could help me?
Thanks in advance,
David

Those instructions have been moved around. Try these links to get a good idea of the construction [there are lots more--search for kilt making, kiltmaking, sewing a kilt, etc.] and then order this.

If Aldisimo's links don't get where you want, PM me. I know I have that hard copied, and I might have it emailable with a bit of searching.

Good news. The pages were archived by the Wayback Machine! I don't know why I didn't think to look there sooner.
Try this.
If you can't access it directly, go to the Wayback Machine and type in the URL.

To be on the safe side, by the book "The Art of Kiltmaking". You can't get anything more detailed.
Good luck!

Good advice, her method is bit more time consuming, but the results are the best!

I used quite a bit of the info from these online instructions when making my first handsewn a few years ago. One point I was fortunate to ignore was their recommendation to put darts into the aprons to take up some of the hip/waist difference. I learned from other sources that darting the aprons is "just not done" and marks the kilt as an amateur production -- a poorly made amateur production, at that.
I'm glad now to have Barb's book, but these free online instructions got me going long before I found XMarks.

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. I've got Barb's book on my b-day list (November seems so far away) but I'm hoping to start my first DIY contemporary before the snow flies. You can be sure I'll post pics.
Thanks again!

Are you using the instructions that you asked about at the beginning of this thread, the X-Kilt instructions, or something else?

Aldisimo,
I will most likely make an X-Kilt for my first attempt, but I'd like to try a knife pleated one as well. I kind of tend to over-prepare for any new project, so I was just trying to find all the info I possibly could. Hopefully I'll get started in a few weeks, and I'll post pics.
