    Leather sources?

Does anyone out there have any sources for project leather, other than Tandy? I need to make bags, sporrans and etc... and need a reasonable, trustworthy source. It's hard to buy over the internet when you can't actually handle the hides. I'm open to any ideas you might have!

I've had very good service with this firm: www.hideandfur.com .

They have quality leather & tanned furs. Prices seems to run competitively too.

E.C. Leather is where I buy all of my leather goods, they are about 1/2 the price of Tandy and offer better costome service. They are out of Oklahoma. For deer and elk hides, Fox Tannery in Murray, Utah can't be beat.

Do you mean Fox Valley Tannery? Salt lake area?. I've had some good stuff from them.

You might try Kentucky Leather and Hide. They have a website and also sell on ebay. I've had pretty good luck with several Ebay sellers. Distand Drums is the one I've patronized most.

I shop at a Tandy here in Richmond and have found the sales people there to be very helpful and knowledgable. They do take call in/mail out orders and will tell the customer if the leather they are going to send them is good or not, and if not, should they still send it out. However, they all work leather and I think that makes a big difference. So if you can find a Tandy that has leather-working sales people, you should be safe with a call in order. Good luck with you search!

Hi there from Australia. I cannot help you with locations, but I went to a tannery near where I live and dicovered they sell off-cuts at very cheap prices. Also, visit the local markets and second-hand stores, because there is a lot of items that get sold which are made of very good quality old leather. I have just finished making my own spooran out of recycled leather, and I am more than happy with it. Visit my thread in the D.I.Y section marked 'Judgement Day'.

    Cheers,
    Alwyn

I'll second Turpin's recommendation of Distant Drums, an e-bay seller. I have purchased some very nice leather from them. Elk and Moose hide, mostly. All of it has been very nice, and very nicely priced, as well.

    Thanks

Thanks, for all the ideas, everyone. I am checking them all out. I do 18th century re-enacting (not Rev War) but same time period, and I'm always in need of good leather.
