Great book! My wife is a Charlton, descended from the Tynedale Charltons, one of the "riding families" on the English side of the Border....

In addition to the MacNeill/MacAuslan tales and The Flashman series, The Steel Bonnets is a must read! I have Kerr and Turner in my background. It's too bad we lost GMF last January.

It's a great read. That's how I found my Dodds family origins.

The MacAuslan series is a semi-autobiographical account of GMF's post-war service with the Gordons. During WWII, he served with the Border Regiment in Burma, and chronicled his experiences in Quartered Safe out Here.

    Hey Streetcar,

I don't know what area of the Emerald City you live in, but while I had some time to kill a few months back. I found a great bookstore. Can't think of the name, but it is in the old Ballard library, right in Ballard. Check it out, They have some great books and the largest nautical section I have seen.

Yes, the last book of his I read was Quartered Safe Out Here, which is quite a revelation about his experiences in wartime Burma. I recommend it, but humor is at the minimum as it is very much a frank story.
