I do not consider Buchanan to be a Sept of MacMillan-- they are that most sad of things: a Clan without a Chief.

My understanding:

I saw MacMillan modern black offered as a tartan.
I order a kilt in said tartan.
1 year later I find that the Clan Chief does not recognize the tartan.
My problem is not with my Clan Chief. It is with the folks that led me to believe it was a clan tartan, not a fashion tartan.

As an aside.. it is a kick-*** tartan. The Chief says I can wear and not promote it.
I do offer an apology to any who selected this tartan on my word.

I'm with you Jack! I think it is the Chuck Norris of Tartans, and purchased my kilt in Edinburgh, believing it was a recognized tartan. I'll still wear it, but will have another recognized kilt made for formal dress.

I know the Campbell's are fairly clear on the subject as well:

The Campbell tartan authorized by the Chief as appropriate for all of Clan Campbell is known in the clan as Campbell tartan and in the trade by various names; "ancient Campbell", "Black Watch", "ancient Black Watch". The colors are ONLY green, black and blue. The shades or tones of the colors may vary from different weavers but the choice of these is a matter for your taste.

Almost all published books on Scottish clans and Tartans, with the exception of the second edition of that by the late Sir Ian Moncreiffe, have errors in their illustrations for Clan Campbell. The confusion results from asking the weavers instead of the Chiefs about which is their clan's tartan.

There are other specific tartans authorized for descendants of the Loudoun, Breadalbane and Cawdor branches of Clan Campbell. The trade has not created the same deliberate or thoughtless confusion about these, although they may be hard to find.

"Argyle", with white and yellow lines, and "Dress", with areas of white, are NOT authorized tartans, although the Argyle is heavily promoted by the trade. Those who already possess non-authorized tartans should not hesitate to wear them. However if innocently stuck with those, you may like to wear a tie, plaid or scarf of authorized tartan so as to show your loyalty to the authority of Clan Campbell and in order to be able to show others the right tartan to buy. That is for you to choose.

The 7th Lord Reay, 21st Chief of the Mackays signed and sealed a sample sett known as the 'Green' Mackay (a.k.a 'Modern' Mackay) for the Highland Society of London in 1816.

I know the following Mackay tartans are authorized by the 14th Lord Reay, Chief of Mackays:

Modern, Ancient, Strathnaver, Weathered, Dutch, & Morgan

however unlike the Fraser or Campbell sites this unfortunately is not defined at all on the Scottish site, you have to go to either the US or Canadian sites to find mention.

It would be helpful for all remaining Chiefs to have such definitive statements about what is authorised.

It would then hopefully inspire better naming by designers and mills of beautiful but unauthorised tartans such as the one in question.
