You could turn the fabric and run the stripes vertically. Just be sure to allow for your waistband when measuring and cutting. Means hemming, which is more work and an iffy proposition if this is really 20 oz fabric. . . have you received it yet and really judged the weight?

If this is 20oz fabric, you should consider making yourself some body armor or a kilt suitable for penguin watching.

No, I have not received the material yet. I won the auction Friday and it is being delivered via priority mail from New Jersey. So, it should arrive this week. But, I will be away at a conference until Friday! Judging from the picture, it looks like pretty heavy stuff. So, 20 oz does seem viable. I plan to make this my winter kilt. No penquins in northern WV, but it does get below zero at times in winter. I believe the horizontal lines will lend themselves to a nice looking pleat. Should resemble a pleated to line pattern from behind anyway.

Thanks to everyone on the input. More gladly accepted!

Another question: Does anyone know how much swing/swish a heavyweight wool, like 20 oz, has in a knife pleat?

    Thanks!
