According to Scotweb's product listing, "In army tradition, Lowlanders (Scots from south of the Highlands) let the ribbons hang free whilst Highlanders would tie them in a bow." Their illustrations show them hanging free. Another vendor (hey, I looked at forum advertisers first) does show a bowed version here. Click to enlarge the photo and you'll see a very flat bow-tie style bow with the "wings" spread wide. Looks as if it has been pressed or even tacked down to keep it flat to the bonnet.
