I've got a lightweight Lochcarron casual kilt: How much warmer does the heavyweight 8-yard feel compared to a pair of jeans? I also have the same problem as you, the over-long sporran strap. I run it through the belt loops over the kilt belt. The metal keeper almost never stays in place. Wear it in good health!
