The berets I buy do have a ribbon in the leather edging, though it is rather thinner than the one for a balmoral.
A beret without the leather band and ribbon could be a bit schoolgirlish?
Maybe not elsewhere - I buy these in the military surplus shop, High Street, Poole, Dorset, England, where there is an assortment of kit from all over Europe, or at the shop in Bovington camp, where they have the tank museum and tend to stick to British issh. I must find a new green one, the moths have attacked mine, no holes but some serious trench digging.
The berets I make are, of course, a perfect fit so need no adjustment.
Still no excuse for not knowing the difference. Lets hope they get flash cards to learn friend from foe for each new assignment.
