I'm 100% of German heritage. My husband is 1/4 Irish. I started out with a modern kilt, but I like tartan (or at least tartan-esque) kilts more. I tend to stick to non-family tartans. My husband thinks that since I'm not of any celtic heritage, I should stick to modern kilts.
I wish I had something funny or profound to put in a signature.

Englishman living in America and of Irish descent.
I know exactly who my Irish ancestors were and where they came from, at least as far back as the records run out. I have no Scottish blood, although my wife does and she knows her clan (Davidson), but she is also English. There are also Scots living in Scotland on my side of the family, but I'm not descended from that branch.
I have kilts in Irish district tartans and a plain black kilt. My Irish clan (bet you can't guess which one it is!) has a tartan, but it is special order (i.e. too expensive unless you have more money than sense), and I won't wear other clans' tartans. I might wear my wife's tartan, but I would probably buy kilts in plain green or plain saffron (traditional Irish colours) before I would get clan Davidson.
In any case, I think it might not be diplomatic of me to get a kilt in my wife's clan tartan when she doesn't already have one herself! Unfortunately, although it may be possible to get a man's kilt in her tartan for as little as thirty bucks, ladies' kilted skirts in the length she wants (mid calf) cost over two hundred!

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet... I'm Scotch/Irish/Welsh/Dutch/American Indian with some Norman decent along the line seeing as two of my ancesstors came over with William the Concourer. The point is your birth you can't choose but like the historic Scots... note the name comes from the Scoties an Irish tribe and fearsness and independence from Pictish and Norse ancesstors, all chose Scotland as theirs'
So a Highland mongril welcome, you are who you are by your choice!

A warm welcome to you, KR, from the south coast of England.
I am, as far as I have been told, one quarter Scottish and three-quarters English - but who knows as I feel much more Scottish than English!
I have worn the kilt since I was 14 and I am now 72. Whilst I respect it for its history I cannot get emotional for the kilt's connections with my roots (possibly because I cannot trace them!). My kilt wearing has been full-time (no trousers in the house) for 9½ years now, and I am equally at home in traditional tartan, contemporary cotton-twill and even leather.
To me, the kilt is a garment, not a costume. I am fascinated by the way it has evolved, especially over the past ten years or so, and excited as to how it will continue to progress in the future - as, indeed, it must and will. So, please do not keep your tartan for special occasions and events, important as they might be, because you really do not have to be Celtic to wear it - believe me!
Take care,
Ham.

As far as I know I'm English with no Scottish, Irish, Welsh or any other Celtic roots in recent history (within 200 years).
I'm kilted all the time these days and I have 8 bought kilt and I'm making another with cloth for two more and XTMS tartan coming for yet more kilt.

Like practically every American, I'm a mutt. But most of my lineage still comes out of Scotland with a little Irish, English, German, and Choctaw thrown in!
