    gaelic meaning

    Hello,
I am a new member to the site and have a question. The buttons on my argyle jacket have an inscription and I wonder if anyone out there knows what it means. It appears to be in gaelic and looks like "clan nan gael an graillibna crelle". It's probably an old military phrase but I would be most interested in it's meaning. I contacted the manufacturer in Scotland but they said their computer crashed and they no longer had that info.
    Anybody out there know?

There are a number of Gaelic speakers on the forum. Unfortunately I'm not one of them. Just wait, one will soon chime in. In the meantime, welcome to the rabble from West Texas.

Hmmm . . the first part "Clan na Gael" (or, the Irish spelling "Clann na nGael") is translated as "family of the Gaels". I'm not sure what the second part of the phrase means??

There was an secret society created here in the USA in 1867 called "Clan na Gael". It was created after the Irish Republican Brotherhood (in Ireland) and the Fenian Brotherhood (in USA) failed. "Clan na Gael's" purpose was to work for Irish Independence from the United Kingdom . . and that it favored direct and, if necessary, violent action to achieve its ends.

I don't think the phrase on the buttons have anything to do with the organization. I just thought it would be an interesting tidbit of information .

Oh . . and . . from "Karst Kountry" . . beautiful Central Kentucky, USA
