Quality of a Tank vs other kilts

I have to agree with McMurdo "they do not hang the same, they do not swing the same and they do not hold a pleat the same way" and that's the very reason why I wear a kilt. I just don't like the way lightweight kilts look and feel, casual or traditional. Kilts can be a significant investment, but I would rather wear them out than let the moths eat them or have the closet shrink them. I’m not saving my kilt for my sons or anything else, it provides me joy and I return the favor by keeping it out in the daylight as much as I can.

I buy them to wear. I sometimes work in a Matt Newsome kilt in the blacksmith shop. I have not worn my "tank" in that situation yet though. Primarily because of the cost of it, but also because it might be too much, standing in front of the forge. (I am pretty sure it would be too hot for me comfort level)

BTW Wool could probably be cooler in that it would block the heat from the forge. I remember some years back when the British Industrial Council (or some such organization) developed a treated wool as a flame retardant/safety material for people in hazardous occupations. It was (then) cheaper than Nomex (tm) and just as if not more effective.

Wool is pretty fire resistant on it's own, really. Smells bad when it does happen though. Go figure.

IMHO Its more about what you can afford vs the likely hood that it will get torn, ripped, stained with motor oil etc. When I mowing the lawn, working on the truck, building a deck, I wear my UK workman. When I go out with the better half, she expects something a lot nicer. I personally can not afford to replace a $600+ kilt on a whim. I wear the kilt most appropriate for what I'm doing. A traditional wool kilt while wrenching on the truck is something I wouldn't do.

Me too. 17oz in the Hunter modern tartan coming in the next few weeks - hopefully in time for the Stone Mountain Games.

What is a Tank. i have heard them discussed here and there, but i just would like a little clarification. I am guessing its a full 16-17 oz kilt in the trad style. and the term "tank" is due to its size and weight.

Quite right Kilted Rogue, I for one do not care for the term however it has become the norm here. Just for further reference here is a link to the FAQ
