The answer to this will definitely be on your airline's website. I found Southwest's stance on their page. (Click the "Sharp Objects" link.)

If you can carry on MRE's, can you heat and eat on the aircraft?

I've never had a problem with it in checked bags....never tried in carry-on bags, but I am sure that would be a no-no...

If it's in the hold, it's not a problem. I've flown all over the world with no problems.

If its in the checked baggage you shouldnt hae problems

Knives or any other sharp items are NOT allowed in the carry on luggage though. Watch for kilt pins as well.

I recently flew kilted to and from Fresno

I hadn't thought about it, but you probably have a point (about the kilt pins). However, I had a kilt pin in my laptop bag at O'Hare earlier this summer, and received no grief from the TSA.

My wife, on the other hand, performed her annual "losing of the swiss army knife" trick. She always forgets she has one in her purse, and ends out having to surrender it before she goes through security. Every year for the last three years running. Fortunately, she doesn't buy the expensive ones.

I traveled by plane from Oslo to Narvik today. Just before going through the security checkpoint, I discovered that I'd forgotten to remove my TFCK kilt pin from the apron of my kilt. I left it on, and went through the metal detector, which I set off, naturally, and had to stand while a security guard ran a detector wand over me. Wonder of wonders, he didn't even remark on the kilt pin, and let me pass. During the course of the journey, I passed through two more checkpoints and had the same thing happen. I never expected to make it to my destination with that kilt pin still in my possession!
