I made a sgian dubh with one of Atlantic Cutlery's blades just recently. You may want to contact them and commission them to sharpen your blade. I did not do that and the blade I got was untempered and will not hold an edge.

Presumably if they are going to sharpen the blade they will temper it first.

Can anyone suggest a good polish for the blade, and were I could get it? Also another newbie question I have Water Buffalo Horn for the handle, do I sand it for a good shine or should I also use a good polish for the handle?

I recently had a sgian dubh made and purchased the scales for the handle from Gallery Hardwoods, an outfit in Oregon. If there's something specific you're looking for that's not posted on their site, email them and odds are they'll have it (I was looking for African Blackwood). Visit them here: http://www.galleryhardwoods.com/. I emailed them a photo of my sporran/kilt belt and they were able to match the color. Larry Davis at Gallery was VERY helpful.

I've not dealt with this company, but the goods look nice and the prices are right. Good luck. I HIGHLY recomend a carvers glove when working the handle, and ounce of prevention...
