If I'm wearing hose, I wear them up. If I'm in a situation where one might want to wear hose scrunched down, such as with a tee shirt and boots, I skip the hose and wear black athletic socks instead. It looks casual, it's comfortable, and I don't have to worry about my hose getting bunched up inside my boots and giving me blisters.

My apologies, did not mean to confuse the issue. Chukka boots are very nice, wore out a pair walking behind some very nice English Setters in the field and they are very comfortable at the range. Chukker is a colloquialism, covers a broad spectrum of short boots, I failed to remember that not everyone would get that.

The boots I had thought about pairing with a kilt are actually these http://www.courteneyboot.com/hunter_m.php
My sister gave them to me when she lived in Johannesburg as I am a frequent visitor to Africa. I just thought I should wear them more.

Those are very nice looking boots. Personally, I would wear the hose up with boots that short, or wear shorter socks.

The boots I wear with a kilt are ankle high boots with laces. The hose are usually up.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Just tossing in my tuppence. As a lad, I wore long hose, upper thigh length with short trousers. I remember still, many decades later the discomfort of baggy, sagging stockings! If I am going to wear them, they will always be up!

Again, just a matter of taste (and childhood psychic trama).

If some kind of short trousers came back into style, I would gladly wear them... But I would avoid wearing baggy hose. I think golfers still wear the short trousers sometimes, though; I'm thinking of the kind that are gathered right below the knee: knee-breeches, knickerbockers, plus-fours... Guess they could even be in tartan or tweed...

Chukka boots are coming back in, Hamish - I bought a pair of Dr. Martens Chukkas in London in September, and I've seen a lot of them about this season. I think they look great with a kilt - and like you, I generally wear hose down with boots and up with shoes. Chukkas are in sort of a grey area, though - not really high enough to be a proper boot, but not low enough for a shoe. If the boot is padded around the ankle I wear the hose down, if not I think it looks OK with the hose up.
