I know nothing about The Kilted Nation, so I can't offer any meaningful advice, there. I will echo the sentiment that you should consider, if you're getting a winter kilt, the MilSpec ones from What Price Glory, as they're relatively inexpensive, and are very heavy wool.

As for Stillwater... I can't recall that anyone has ever said anything negative about them... most emphatically including myself.

Smile In answer to your question, well not really...

As I recall Maryland can get cold -- so I would say the safer choice would be Stillwater. I have bought from Stillwater and I'd say you can't go wrong there. I haven't bought from Kilted Nation -- yet.

My blended fabric kilts are not that heavy/thick. If you're really going to brave the winter weather, I'd do it in a heavy weight wool...

(You didn't mention price, so I'm assuming that's not a major issue.)

    Well, best of luck!

I have to agree with this, either get a kilt from What Price Glory for the winter or at least get a good quality 16 oz wool kilt, it may be more than you want to spend but this way you will have a kilt that will meet the needs of the winter to come. I know a bit about it.

I have one USA Kilts semi-traditional model in poly-viscose and I love it, it is my favorite summer kilt.

I have three Stillwater Heavyweight Kilts and really think highly of them as well.

If warmth is your biggest factor I would go with the SWK Heavyweight, they are much warmer and heavier than 11-12 oz. PV.

    Cheers

Having lived in the DC area some time back, I remember the winters as being relatively mild. (I moved there from the mid-West, Iowa.)

Here in Eastern NC, my 13oz tank is plenty warm enough. But then it is wool. Since I am too tall for the off the peg kilts, I cannot give any advice on those. But my preference would be for the wool.

Haven't got one but... The What Price Glory 22oz Gordon sounds like exceptional value at $195 US.

Sort of a buckle-able duvet, pleated to stripe.

I'm not sure if warmth should be a primary concern. My kilts are all heavy wool and while my hips and my abdomen do not feel the chill of the northern Virginia winters, even my regimental weight kilt does not keep all of me warm! I'm a fan of wool for looks and wearability, but I'd say get what you like. I saw some TKN kilts at the Alexandria Scottish Heritage Fair and they seemed just as advertised and worth the cost.
