Well, after talking with the boss (my fiancee) I guess this Halloween I'm going to surprise everyone at work and NOT wear the kilt! We're having a contest so I think doing something people don't expect will help edge me toward winning some money (which I will probably use to purchase another kilt! ). I'm trying to brainstorm on what to be though.

I guess my conclusion was that for me the kilt is a daily wear item and not a costume. Nevertheless, if done correctly (as the pictures in this thread have attested can be done), then it becomes part of a costume, so I wouldn't wear my daily wear (kilt + tshirt + boots) for Halloween, but would probably do a historic costume or something very unique like what Riverkilt did, but in the end I don't think I could pull off the Bob Marley kilt!

Thanks for everyone's suggestions and comments.

As an historic re-enactor, I will probably wear my Ren garb including Great Kilt. However, I would not wear my trad kilt as a costume or as part of one.

I do have to admit though that last Halloween I wore a kilt, just because I wanted to be comfortable, and it just distracted from the costume (it was a t-shirt and something I carried - a make-you-think kinda thing), people didn't get it because they focused on the kilt...

You could wear a kilt as PART of a costume just as you could any other article of clothing. For instance, if a person normally wears jeans as daily wear, he could make them part of a cowboy or biker costume easily.

Now, just because many people think that a kilt is a costume anyway, I wouldn't go as a "Scotsman" or anything like that. Instead, I would go for a historical type costume or something like Ron has done.

In this regard, does wearing green on st pat's day make your outfit a costume instead of an outfit? I am thinking of wearing my kilt on Columbus day since i have the day off, (Def will if I manage to get my wife to let me buy a black watch at the ren fest, cost more than stillwater I know, but its 'handy')

I also am thinking about saving up for the 'ohio' tartan as a kilt, it doesn't look all that bad, i think. Be nice during Fourth of July, Flag Day, Constitution Day.. (ironically, St Pats is my wife and my dating anniversary and flag day is our wedding anniversary.)

Of course, if one is wearing a r/w/b kilt on a national patriotic holiday, is that costume or pride?

Guess I could wear my kakhi kilt, a hawaiian or aloha shirt, my straw hat, and sandles around on Halloween. That's what I sometimes wear to the pit firings at the studio.

    * I just heard Jock Scot groan. Sorry about that Jock. *

Probably won't really be wearing that on Halloween.

    I'm doing the same.

I have reproduced this picture using MacKenzie weathered (I don't like Buchannan). I haven't got the baldric or shoes yet, and my doublet is being made. So this is (more or less) how I'm going.
