Wow! What an adventure. "Summon the boatman" certainly has an epic resonance about the phrase.

That's a pretty castle. And how cool is it that you have to call a boatman?!?

One of the smaller towers near the Keep.

View of the Keep which is also known as "Archibald's Tower."

This plaque reconstructs what life in the Tower was like.

Slightly different angle on the Tower.

This wooden bridge replaces an earlier drawbridge.

Remains of a small tower near the Keep.

    More to come!

The BBC had a very interesting programme about the Douglas's last week. It may still be available on their I-Player site ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/ ). The heart on the wooden bowls dredged out of the river represents Robert the Bruce's heart that Sir James Douglas took on crusade to the Holy Land but he, unfortunately, didn't make it any further than Spain where he was killed fighting the Moors there and there is a memorial to him there. Their coat of arms has the heart in it.

Those are really nice photos. It looks like you had the place to yourself. No matter how many times I go to Scotland when I come upon a castle or what remains of it, it is always exciting all over again to me as if it is the first time seeing one.
    Cheers, Leslie

A view along the side of the Keep.

And the space between the Keep and the outer wall.

    Defensive windows.

    Row of defensive windows.

Remains of a circular tower - reminds me of one quite like it at Caerlaverock Castle.

The Castle also has a harbour but obviously not for big ships!

    Medieval sanitation!

    More to come!

Great photos. I've always preferred the look of the Scottish castles over the English designs.

    View inside the Keep.

Model of the Castle as it would have been in its prime.

    Another plaque.

Climbing up to the next level which is open to the skies there are nice windows like this one and with a nice view too.

General view of the upper level.

    Last set to follow.
