I think Glen the both of us are in greater agreement than we imagined at first
I also think if this conversation was in person we'd realize it sooner. That is the problem with this electronic medium sometimes, the meaning etc gets lost in translation.

What I meant by "give the newbie a break" was the whole "Man up, wear the kilt the way it was meant to be worn" attitude that tends to shout at me that if you don't wear it regimental than your less than a man (of course I maybe losing something in the translation) when even our Scottish friends are in disagreement over what's "proper" (regimental vs none regimental)....my thought being if the "newbie" is making an effort by wearing some form of under wear (other than long johns) then cut him some slack.
Again, I might be missing something in the translation, but that is what I take from it.

I think in the long run he's got a good mentor in Puffer who'll see to it he doesn't stray far
