Yes, friend, get it thoroughly wet, squeeze out the water, and wear it dry to conform to your head and how you want it to look on your noggin!

Last night I soaked it in water for a little bit and then set it outside on my porch with a fan blowing on it. Before I went to bed I brought it back inside with the fan and set it up in the bathroom. This morning I checked it. It is smelling better. MUCH BETTER! I think I still smell a hint of the dust and smoke, but it is a HUGE improvement. When it is fully dry I'll let it sit out on its own for a bit and then check it again. If it still has the odor then I'll get some Woolite. But as of right now, there is a huge improvement. Thank you all again for all your help.

If you do the Woolite bit, add a little hair conditioner to the rinse, it will help the wool get back some of its natural oils that are removed by the washing.

If there is still a bit of odor after airing it out, you can try spritzing it with a little Febreze.

Alright, I went home last night after work I checked on it the second I walked in the door. I left a fan on it all day inside. When I picked it up and brought it to my nose I was pleasantly surprised. The entire smell is gone. It's back to smelling like, well, nothing. There is no scent whatsoever. I'm very happy about this.

Thank you all. Now I know how to clean wool. I'll see if I can get a picture of this thing up here so I can show you all what you helped me preserve.

    Shaping Wool

If this is to be a flat hat, wet and let dry flat, obviously. The British Militarary pull their's over to right side to show off the crest which is centered over the left ear. The US Military puts the crest over the left eye and pull the wool to stand up the crest. Either way you wet the wool and shape letting it dry on your head.

When/If I do wear it, it would not be worn flat. As for the placing of the pin....I may go American on this aspect. Not sure yet.

You will probably find that if you wear a badge over your left eye(American style) your tam will not look right at all. If you wear your badge so it is in front of your left ear, but the leading edge of your badge needs to be just behind the left tip of your left eyebrow, it will look just the ticket.
