College Freshman Gets Noticed in His UK

Carroll seems like the average Mount freshman . . . what sets him apart from the other students on campus is his style of clothing.

From looking around campus, most of the students wear UGGS, sweats and the occasional J. Crew styles. But Michael Carroll stands out by having a unique Scottish wardrobe. His typical attire consists of a kilt, leather jacket and dark black boots.

"I would describe my style as comfortable and I also like the way it looks," Carroll said.

"My aunt and uncle are from Seattle and the company that I get my kilts from is in Seattle. I also saw some people with the kilt style and decided to make the change after my uncle bought me a kilt the summer before my freshman year in high school," Carroll said.

Carroll currently has almost 10 kilts in his wardrobe and gets them online from a Seattle based online company called Utilikilts.

Someone should tell the reporter that a UK is not part of "a unique Scottish wardrobe." Otherwise a very nicely written article.

How about dark black boots? Have you seen any black boots that weren't dark? Good article, though.

So the writer is no expert on kilts or Scottishness; very few Americans are. Give her credit for recognizing that a UK is a kilt, and for associating kilts with Scotland. And for being receptive to Carroll's departure from herd attire.

Ian - my statement was not to decry the Utilikilt in any way - it's just that I see it as an American product.
As you say, she may not have known the difference.

Ummm, regardless of where they're made Utilikilts are often called "Scottish Jeans" in tribute to their being kilts, but casual...about the only stretch I can think of as UKs being Scottish.
Of course Steven would be the first to deny UKs are Scottish.
