I would say it depends on the current relationship. Was this a one time event or has this type of behavior continued. Understand that if he wears the kilt, the relationship will only get worse. If you have a pretty good relationship, I would forget about wearing the kilt. If she has continued to attempt to control and manipulate things, I probably wouldn't go to the wedding.

As my dad says, "It's better to make friends than enemies."
I've always been one who tries to forgive and forget, and move on. Respect the wishes of the bride and groom, and avoid making a huge scene about it. If you feel you must confront your mother regarding this, then do so in private, after the wedding, with a spirit of humility and reconciliation.
That's my advice, anyway. It's worked for me thus far.

Taking the high road is thought provoking when dealing with morals, values, if someone can be killed, mamed, sent to hell, raised to heaven. None of the above seeming to play into this ponderance. She was willing to play the game then, i'd have to find out for myself if she is still willing to play the game now. Have a little fun ya!!!!

No. If I were you, I'd probably consider not going at all.

You might split the difference -- trousers for the ceremony and a kilt for the reception.

I'm with Jack. Why would you want to attend the wedding of someone who pulled such a viscious stunt at your own wedding?
The lady sounds like a major control freak...whatever you wore it wouldn't be "right" and would "ruin" her wedding.
Run! Call in sick! Arrange for your car to break down!

same vote for me. I had an ex mother in law that was much the same way. We finally had nothing to do with her. I need help cleaning my gargage that day (whatever day it is) if you need an excuse!

If you REALLY want to "bankroll the joke", buy some cheap kilts for the wait staff who serve the main course.
Or how about a Kilt Suit? It's not a tartan kilt, it looks nice and dressy and you can use it afterwards...

I too agree with Ron on this, be on vacation as far away as you can. This sort of thing never really gets better.
On the other hand, you could use the 10% discount at Sportkilt this month to do as Rocky suggests(although I'm sure he would love to sell those to you himself).
Bob
If you can't be good, be entertaining!!!
