My wifes coming around
She had real limits with wearing the kilt originally, but she's breaking, slowly. My son and I wore ours out to shop last week, she didn't go along, but today I told her I was going to wear it again one day this weekend, but I would let her pick. She has said she doesn't want me to wear it on our 'family day' but our son picked out my shirt and decided I needed to wear the kilt today, and it 'matched' so he won.
The comments were about 50/50 today, the first was a guy that came up and asked about linage, and after saying I wasn't directly Scottish mentioned something about it must be comfy, but my wife thinks that after saying I wasn't Scottish that he was weirded out. The next two comments were rather downhill from there, the first was a woman at walmart that said 'skirt' and started laughing like I was a standup comic. Then a few feet later, a woman (ugly at that) said she hoped I had something dang warm under it (In a manner that suggested she had hit the bottle, or soon would be) but after that, pretty much all positive. One woman in an electric scooter stopped me and asked about it, she wants to get her husband one, since he was descended from highland (she said she was lowland) so I gave her one of my business cards (for hotsauce) with stillwaterkilts and xmarks websites written on the back.
My wife hasn't broken yet, and she still has restrictions, but its getting better...

One of my kilt mottos has been "Never take kilt advice by someone wearing pants". I think I'll add to that, "Never listen to comments about one's kilt from homely women at walmart" ;-)
Hang in there!!!!! At first my wife was unsure--now she's a BIG fan.

Ah, ignore the peanut gallery at Mall-Wart! I'm sure they were smartly attired in stained jogging suits chasing after their brood of ten equally ugly children!

Yep...patience with your wife will almost certainly pay off in the end. During the "break-in" period, it's best to avoid places like Wal-Mart, however.

The day I alter my bearing, attitude, or clothing to fit in with what folks at Wal Mart or Target think is appropriate is....uh.....words fail me.

The first really positive comment about the kilt came from a Scotsman at that same walmart, about 15 feet from where today's two negative came from.

Wal-Mart seems like it would be a bad place to wear a kilt just because of the people who shop there. But its good to wear it often, especially if you're getting support.

Yes, I agree. Wal Mart is what I refer as an ignormagnet. It draws ignorant people- a lot like malls.

...the day I die or become physically incapable of stopping said people from dressing me.
Those words fit your sentiment, Alan? I get the feeling that they might.
