Quite so. I had to attend these functions for 34 years both as a staff engineer, and as a engineering manager. It was always communicated orally that attendance was expected. When I became a manager, I had to tell my people that attendance was expected (although I personally did not agree with it.) Your dedication to the company was questioned if you didn't show up.

I always dreaded these events - more like an additional work day, but with 25% of your associates drunk since the company paid for all the drinks. I didn't wear kilts then, but can imagine what it would have been like as the evening progressed.

I use to work for Ex*** and it was expected and a sit down dinner and dance. My Boss would come early and as soon as the Dinner was over he and his wife would leave and most people would not be the wiser. I had to stay till the President of the Co. left (I usually had to photograph the party for our news letter).
Go early Kilted and leave early and you will be seen and you did attend.

if you wimp out and don't go........who won?...............

also if you don't wear the kilt imagine the amount of people that will be asking you" Why you didn't wear the kilt and I am sure they will outnumber the deadbeats.................

No chance, I don't get out much as it is. I'm the main organiser of our outing anyway. It's not my work colleagues who will cause the bother. They are used to my kilt and are disappointed when I told them I'm not wearing it this year. The ladies are going cocktail dresses and wished me to be smart too. Had it been an hotel, I would wear it for sure.
