I yield to no one in my depth of respect for Family, and for the priority of taking care of your own, and honoring one's Clan.
Both my parents were Departed by the time I was in my mid 20's, and I would give half the teeth in my head to have just one more day with either of them.
Just this past Summer, suddenly & without warning, my only daughter Passed Over, at the vibrant age of 25, and surely it's no great challenge to imagine what I'd sacrifice to see her for even one more hour, during my Waking Life.
That said, it defames & cheapens everyone, up or down our lines, to belittle or marginalize or ignore the cultural traditions and identities of the centuries of ancestors without whom we would not even exist, or at least would not exist as the great, proud people we are!
No one deserves a care blanche on that, not Moms, not Dads, not even your Grandfolks, or Great Aunt Minnie, and especially not anyone's snotty, conceited siblings!
I think Maya Angelou (hardly Scottish, but certainly proud of her roots) said it best, and simplest:
IT MATTERS LESS WHAT YOU CALL ME, THAN WHAT I ANSWER TO.
