Actually, his kilt is in a very faded version of the Cameron tartan, which does tend to look solid in B&W photography. In another thread recently, there was a color picture posted where you could see the tartan, however.

Matt the "colour" photo posted was touched up in photobucket, I would not be so sure that those are the true colours.

Oh I know I posted that one originally. I just meant that the "colour" photo you were referencing had dubious origins.

I have to admit, I love this photo. I think many people forget that nobility and royalty are people deep down as well, and you can see that here.

I may not have this right, but wasn't it Simon Fraser, 15 th Lord Lovat (and Mac Shimi) that Winston Churchill was referring to when he said something like "the mildest-mannered man who ever scuttled ship or cut throat"? He does look like a movie star, though!

That is correct, Simon Fraser himself.

And he DID land on Sword beach with his piper, against specific orders not to do so.

On a side note, I do mix my plaid shirts with my kilts and the look is fantastic I have to say.

Oh dear, I didn't mean to post duplicates. Terribly sorry. I think I can only keep up with maybe 2% of the posts here these days. But yes, the larger version does indeed show it to be a tartan. I should have paid closer attention.

And Glen, I see you earlier found the same cache of photos. This must be it, the beginning of the fall... I'm slipping...
