Repeal Day
Happy Repeal Day everyone!
Today marks the 75th anniversary of the ratification of the 21st Ammendment to the U.S. Constitution. For the non-Constitutional scholars among us (I'm in this group. Had to look this stuff up) that means the end of Prohibition.
So for those who care to imbibe....raise your glasses to being able to raise your glasses!
Slainte mhath!

Certainly a cause I'll celebrate, kilted, down at my local pub, but historically, always a source of mixed emotion for me: my grandparents and their siblings enjoyed a nicer standard of living during "Big Pro", as they were all able to step-up their involvement with moonshining & black marketing & even some over-border activities in Quebec. Come the repeal, it was right back to the hardscrabble life of logging, and smack in the Great Depression, no less!
But, it'll be me & Johnny (Jameson) & Art (Guinness), sharing toasts with friends & neighbors, kith, kin & clan; this past year, the Reaper, wearing his own tartan of blood & tears, has taken from our hearth two old firends, a nephew & my only daughter, so we'll be well visited from the Far Shore as well.
So SLAINTE, say I, slainte mhath!

I'll be celebrating with some bathtub gin. That is, I'm going to sit in my bathtub and drink some gin. In other words, just a normal day for me.

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your daughter and nephew, as well as your friends. I lost my mother recently, so I can relate.
I'll raise a glass (at least in spirit) to them and you today.

Guess I should be grateful too. Repeal is keeping my office chuck full of DUI drivers needing treatment for court compliance, and its keeping our local AA meetings full of folks needing that support. Without that repeal, even with bootlegging which still flourishes on the reservation, the local economy would for certain collapse. We'd not have three supermarkets and a couple dozen bars and liquor stores in our little town of 6,800. The hospital would be much smaller. The police force would be token. Instead of four treatment agencies in town we'd probably only have one small one. City court revenues would be nil. We probably wouldn't need such a large DV shelter.
Much to be said for booze in economic terms.

Well I'll have to raise a glass tonight. I may open a bottle of Ommegang that I've had hanging out in the basement. Mmm Rare Vos.
