Tank?

'Scuse my ignorance, but I've seen a few threads that mention a "tank". I realise it's a colloquialism for kilt, but who coined it and why? I've owned a military kilt and I suppose you could say that was a tank in comparison with a regular kilt, but is there something more to this?

It is a nickname for want of a better word that refers to a traditional heavy weight hand made wool kilt, as opposed to a contemporary kilt or a traditional made from a PV or wool blend fabric.
Your military kilt would qualify in that category.

Here is the FAQ page that goes into detail about a "Tank." I'm not a big fan of the term I prefer to call it an 8 yard hand sewn 16 oz kilt, however it has seemed to catch on.

Jimmy Carbomb coined the term. Since a traditional 8yd hand sewn wool kilt is so well made, you could say "It's built like a tank."

I think in this forum, it makes it easier to distinguish what you are talking about when you don't mean one of the other types of kilts. I never use the term anywhere else, but do occasionally use it here when that is exactly what I mean.

Someone posted a newspaper article here once where the reporter stated that these kinds of kilts are "called a tank," and I cringed a little, if only for her use of a single source of information and failure to check facts.
