I'm curious how you guys deal with dreaded "tartan creep?" I went out in my SWK heaviweight and an Aran sweater to do some hiking with my son the other day, and noticed that the kilt would "walk" up my legs in the front, under the sporran, exposing my legs to the cold. It got pretty annoying having to straighten things out so frequently. I was wearing some sort of knit, insulating boxers underneath which I think was the source of the problem. I thought that I might be froced to switch to bike shorts, which are a smoother surface....

The boxers are part of it, but the biggest part is hiking upwards like that. Just the motion of constantly going diagonally upwards pulls it up.
When that happens just slip your sporran around so that it's hanging on your hip and it'll stop.

Here in northern New England, wintertime is definitely the season that tests one's true commitment to staying "regimental" . . so far, I 've persevered, and haven't needed to surrender the tradition.
My best advice for outdoor activities: keep moving, keep drinking, keep your head & hands covered, and retire those GB's for a stout pair of stompers!
To the inevitable: "Aren't you cold like that?!" query, my favorite response is: "Aye, but the cold keeps things fresh!"

I'm with Arlen on this: the combination of uphill and sporran is the offender, especially if the sporran is riding a bit low.

This is the one time of the year that I get to brag about our weather here in Sunny Arizona. I'm not a big fan of the 115 degree summers, but right now our weather is picture perfect.
Here's our weekely forcast for this week. Not too bad.

This weekend I attended a club dinner. As seems to be usual for this time of the year, temperatures were -30C with windchill (about -22F).
In an 8 yard 16 oz Sinclair Modern with nice wool Piper hose I was toasty warm. Even the knees weren't that chilled when going outside for a smoke. In this cold weather, though, I will give in and wear briefs. A -30C gust up the kilt wouldn't be comfortable...

Yes, and doubly if it's kind of full and heavy.

*GASP* does this mean I should toss the flask? Surely not! Actually, I usually use sporran hangers (although I'm liking straps a bit more) and was using those this time, so lowness wasn't a factor, but I definately noticed it alot more climbing uphill compared to the flats.

Joe Nameth wore panty hose. Which you could get away with seeing how only our knees show.
