Does anyone else realize just who is in this picture?

That would be George V and Queen Mary. (Now why in the world would he wear a sporran and what looks like black trousers?)

I would assume the kid wearing the horsehair sporran is the future Edward VIII and the one sitting and not happy (premonitions of what's to come?) is the future George VI.

No offense to those of you who do not favor the Flat Cap with a kilt but you really can't get more fashion forward than Royalty. It may not be the fashion of the day but er...what the heck.

(I will also at some point re-post some pics of me on a Ferintosh pub crawl wearing a kilt and flat cap.)

Er well um,I was not talking about the hat less King, I was talking about the chap next to him wearing the tweed cap and who knows what he has around his waist! Of course, His Majesty is setting the fashion by NOT wearing a flat cap!

I think he is actually wearing a kilt - the bifurcated effect is actually the arm of a chair in front of him - George V that is. From the look of the granire wall behind the photo was probably taken at Balmoral where the royals don their kilts, walk on tartan carpets, have balls for the ghillies and generally indulge in "Balmorality" their version of pretending to go native in Scotland while massacreing the local wildlife not to mention the odd cat or two.

What super pictures. Try as I might I cannot see any flat tweed caps even in the 1950's. I note that King George VI is hat less. From what I can remember of the 1950's the balmoral was not at all unusual at highland games, a bit less common these days at the games I would say. Note the crowd(1950's) scenes there are few bonnets to be seen.
