You're right. What I saw was an exception to the proper costume and I should have recognized it as such.

Actually, he's not supposed to wear a hat with a name band or ribbons on at all. As Highland dancers come from all around the world, we wear a 'generic' hat in keeping with the SOBHD dress code. A hat in fact, such as the one pictured in Riverkilt's post. Technically, that young man could be marked down for wearing such a hat.

And OMG - someone should have shown that poor child how to wear a cap tally. The name of the ship goes across the front and the bow over the ear

If you saw the hat being worn with the kilt, it was an exception and for 'show' only. It is worn as part of the hornpipe costume when done in competition and medal testing. Outside of that, it's for fun.

Ah - this one does appear to have a tally on it, must have been a mistake. I agree the generic, going without is better as it would avoid insult if, (on the very off chance), someone who actually sailed on the ship was watching. That being said, I am all for cosutmes in dance and especially ones showing sailors

Proper Naval Head Gear with Kilt

The proper naval headress with a kilt is a black traditional Glengarry with the Sea Cadet or Navy Hat Brass on the side. I hope this clarifies matters for all.

No, that was the proper costume for the Hornpipe.

					First, Ron, NO! NO! NO!
But if you must, get an Australian one. Canadian ones are circular, Australian are oval shaped. Much more comfortable. I can't speak for other Commonwealth navies.

 In conclusion: NOOOOOOO!
