What should I wear to church tonight?

Tonight we are celebrating the Feast of the Nativity (Christmas) at my church. I'm going to wear Black Watch kilt, white shirt, , black tie and black hose.

Here's my question- Which jacket is more appropriate for an occasion such as this, a black argyll with silver buttons, or a tweed argyll?

I've always worn a tweed argyll. You can always flip a coin, both are good.

The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning toward the tweed. It's currently in the high 30s and raining, and the tweed is much heavier, which makes it the more logical choice. Also, no one in my parish has seen my tweed Argyll yet, as it's a fairly recent acquisition.

Dang it, now I came up with another question. The tweed Argyll is a light, sagey lovat green. Would black hose look better with it, or cream?

For the midnight Mass: Braemer with 5 button vest, red four-in-hand tie, red MacLaine of Lochbuie kilt, with matching flashes on dark green hose, black leather sporran. Since I sing in the choir, will be in the loft at the back of the church, and the coat will probably come off as hot air rises.

I don't think Jesus would care whether you look color coordinated or not, as much as you show up at mass.

I would go with black hose though. That's the same outfit I wore this morning to church: BW kilt, black hose, white shirt, regimental tie and tweed jacket.

I suggest the tweed to church, its about equivalent to a suit, particularly with a waistcoat. Your silver buttoned argyll is equivalent to a morning suit(ok, I know they are worn with a bow tie for evening wear these days too) but ask yourself this;"would I wear a morning suit,or, tux to this service?" If your answer is no, then wear the tweed.

I am not sure that black hose goes too well with the Lovat green jacket, but then, why worry? Wear what you have got.

Thanks for all the suggestions and comments. I ended up wearing the Lovat green tweed Argyll and the cream hose. I was warm when outdoors, comfortable when indoors, and I got nothing but compliments.

Jock, I was thinking the same thing about the black hose. I figured that with a light colored jacket, the black hose would make the outfit very "bottom heavy," whereas the cream hose would break up the outfit and create visual symmetry.

Thanks for sharing that, John. A good point to remember for putting together a wardrobe. And Merry Christmas to all!
