The 18 oz I made doesn't swish - it clears out a small area around me.
I have to finish the PV I'm working on now, and then start my second 18 oz knife pleat.

Nothing wrong with doubling the fabric. You could use something like "Stitch Witchery" or a similar spidery webby glue between the layers to hold them together.......

Yeah, the one I wore in the military was a 20 ouncer (I was a Seaforth Highlander). It was great. It's what inspired me to look into wearing kilts again.
The ONLY downside I can think of is that where a military kilt hits is higher on the body than a normal kilt. Basically, you're putting a belt right around your floating ribs. It can make deep breathing a bit of a chore. With civilian kilts this isn't a worry.
The swish is fantastic, and it'll keep you warm through just about anything. It's almost too warm for summer!
I just had a thought though. I remember the coolest sporran I ever wore with it was the horsehair one. You had the swish going on the front AND the back. Plus, when you sat down, it was definitely the most modest sporran going! I know some people say that no one wears horsehair sporrans anymore except pipebands and the military, but other people say that there are "no rules" about what to wear with a kilt.
I recommend bringing back the horsehair sporran! What do you guys think?
