My first kilt!

I just skimmed the posts to this thread so forgive me if I repeat what someone has already said.
First- congratualtions on your decision to be kilted.
Second- before you wear your kilt to school, consult your student handbook and talk to your counselors or administration. Some school districts don't allow clothing that is determined to be "distracting". There are, unfortunately, some principals and administrators who view wearing a kilt to school just that. There have been numerous stories on the internet of students being forced to change or sent home when showing up for school in a kilt...but that's at school...if you can't where your kilt to school, don't let that stop you from wearing it everywhere else!

Thank you! Last year there was a friend of mine that wore his kilt quite often, and as far as I know, he didn't get in any trouble for wearing it, and there are tons of other garments allowed that are way more distracting than a kilt, but I will check first. Thanks for the the suggestion!

Hello lad-who-wants-to-try-out-the-kilt

I'm 17 myself now and bought my first kilt ''package'' when I was 16. It consisted of a polywool kilt in the tartan 'Pride of Scotland', a semi-dress sporran, ecru kilt hoses, a 15 euro kiltpin and the belt and buckle. I bought some formal standard brogues later which fitted with it nicely. (the kilt outfit cost me some 200 euros total, because polywool isn't expensive material, the brogues were 155 euros however XD)

I now have a rabbit skin formal dress sporran, gordon modern kilt (and tie) (67 cm, because I'm rather tall, was happy to find it), an argyll waistcoat and the jacket is being made to measure at this moment. and another pair of black kilthoses to go with the jacket. flashes too, ofcourse.

when I first wore my kilt to school I ofcourse got some funny comments, and a little bit of laughter, but I notified my friends in advance and they found it simply awesome. The best thing is though, that anyone who acts funny towards you, would never be brave enough to wear a 'skirt' himself.

I mostly use my kilt as formal wear, but I do on occasion (regardless the weather because a full 8-yard kilt with fancy hoses under it is rather warm) wear it when going out shopping or for example in the Irish Pub in my town. When you walk outside in your kilt, notice that the majority of the people aged 30 or older think it's fairly cool, and teens and young students think it's weird. This is due to the fact that they are rather insecure about themselves and so might very well envy you for having the self- confidence to wear what you want.

And about your Heritage, the black watch you seem to have now is perfect, and just stick to national/international tartans, or marry a pretty scottish girl and take her surname ;)

Here are a few of my thoughts
1. Your BASIC LOOK = Traditional ( meaning a "traditional' kilt in a Tartan)
= Traditional contemporary = ( meaning a "traditional" kilt in a solid or "shadow")
After you decide this, then you can choose the accessories to complete the look.

Standard SWK (synthetic which is easy to care for & fairly warm, but also good for "summer wear) = $80.00
Hwy. WT. SWK ( wool & is the best if you want a warmer kilt.) = $130.00

HOSE = WB SOCKS http://stores.ebay.com/WB-SOCKS ( I own 8 pairs ) The cost is GREAT & the quality is good.

Sporran = SWK ( good quality items @ a good $$$) OR if you have the $$$ then I would recommend This maker His $$ & quality can not be beat, IMHO. Sporran Belt = SWK ( this is not your kilt belt)

KILT Belt = Here is an area were IMHO, you should spend a "little. A GOOD belt is IMPORTANT. ALSO IMHO, I would not get a belt with a "classic Celtic" buckle.But one with a STANDARD TYPE. (why?? MORE versatility) Here are 2 I recommend

I now have my Nightstalker Sporran, Belt, and flashes all from SWK, but I have to admit, the flashes look a tad sily on my regular wool socks. Still waiting for the socks to get here from the UK, but once they get here, I can finally kiss freezing calves goodbye (and good riddence!)

I has been unseaonally warm around here lately, but just recently the weather got nasty again, so I find myself jonesing over the socks for two reasons now. I'll be sure and get some pics up as soon as those stubborn socks get here!
