Due to side-work, I attend quite a few sci-fi/comic conventions (Dragon*Con, San Diego Comic-Con, etc). There's a huge upswing in folks wearing Utilikilts, etc. I'm sure some of you have seen the 501st Stormtrooper Legion done up in kilts (from USAKilts, right Rocky?)...

A close friend of mine is on a rather well-known TV show (Battlestar Galactica) and I am THIS close to getting him into a kilt. In fact, at Dragon*Con last year in Atlanta, 3 of us were going to buy Utilikilts right there and then, but alas, their booth was gone... and from what I understand, it was due to being sold out within the first 2 days.

Modern-looking touches to sporrans, such as the Punisher skull, or Mandalore skull, or other Star Wars or pop-culture stuff, to me, is just a great thing for promoting the kilt overall... and really, I think it looks cool.

Frankly, being the Punisher fan that I am (and not much of a Star Wars fan), I find the Punisher sporran way more appealing, though the tusked skull graphic would look awesome (might have to put that on a leather mug or bottle when I make one). I'm going to have to ask though... do you mind if I swipe your Punisher skull on a sporran idea?

I also noticed that Donnie posts as "Wyvern" on http://www.leatherworkers.net.
 His work looks impeccable!

As a traditionalist, I must admit that I don't find this idea personally appealing. But I wear Highland attire in the traditional manner in tribute to my Scottish heritage and for myself. I am not interested in converting the masses, I am interested in preserving traditions and customs and promoting the contributions of the Scottish diaspora.

I have enough friends with Scottish ancestry that I find it very interesting learning the history and the culture.
I think it is awesome if you have a tie to a clan or sect that you learn what you can about it and honor it by wearing an appropriate tartan.
I know I certainly would if I had that tie.

I know there are plenty out there like you Todd that prefer the traditional.
I guess that was my point that I hope you aren't offended by those of us that wear the modern versions and know that we (or at least I) definitely appreciate the culture and history from which it came.

No worries; you didn't offend me in the slightest. As I said before, this style of sporran decoration isn't my thing, but I'm not going to say someone is wrong for liking it.

My problem is when some people (not you, btw) paint traditionalists as intolerant/mean/etc. when we offer a more traditional view of Highland attire.

Just a quick question... Since I'm a total Star Wars Nerd, would you mind if I swipe the Jaing and have a sporran made with it on? I'm thinking that it would look great on a black leather and have the skull done like your Punisher one...

Just a quick Star Wars FYI:
The members of the Kilted Trooper Brigade (501st members who also have kilts) have chosen the Prince of Wales tartan as the official KTB tartan.

There - now you have two ways to tie Star Wars and kilting.
