I'm 5 feet tall ... and I can get on a horse (with just using the stirrup). And many professional jockies are my height or in some cases even shorter than me and they are getting on very big race horses.

I wear mine over my... bits and pieces. That way, if a stiff wind blows up, I don't have any problems with my dignity.
And in truth, I don't wear one very often. I have a black leather belt pouch that I wear instead. Sporrans tend to get in the way in my experience.

Okay, so I'm not alone in wearing the sporran "down there". But, what's this about a belt pouch? Does that help preserve dignity? Maybe I'm just picturing it all wrong in my head.
I've seen soldiers move sporrans over to the (usually right) side when they had to get them out of the way. I think that's where snare drummers have them when playing. I think that's also what the guys did who were doing run-ups on the live fire range, before we changed to combats with trousers.
Of course, I've seen plenty of pictures of Highland troops with nary a sporran in sight - they weren't adverse to take it off if it got in the way too!

I definitely agree with those who mentioned that the sporrans look to be in the correct place, as they were intended to offer some protection for the male anatomy.

I always thought that was the prime purpose of the sporran, the the ability to hold oddments was secondary.

Personally, I think protecting my dignity is secondary. I have very little of that. And I have a lot of stuff to hold...

I wasn't thinking of dignity, but something far more likely to be damaging!
