Thanks to all who have replied, and a special thanks to those who posted pics. Sorry I haven't replied sooner to thank you, I've just returned from a holiday family trip over the new year (1230 a.m.) and have just gotten around to checking email and the boards.
This goes a long way to answering my initial questions.
Please feel free to continue posting! I find this quite educational.
As to the beard, I've recently resprouted the face fur and was told on Christmas day that it made the kilt.(I guess the old legs needed some help)
Thanks again,
DryFly

I shaved my Vandyck off just before Christmas I do not think you need one with a kilt, however I've been thinking about growing it back.
You asked for more photos and so as I can not resist, here are some more
Day wear
Wearing a Balmoral hat, with my Isle of Skye Kilt, my Grey Braemar Jacket and waistcoat, the blue tie is a wool tie, I find that a solid colour wool tie works better with a kilt that a tie that is too busy so that it does not compete for attention. The Sporran is a Ferguson Britt sporran, and works well through the entire gamut of Highland Dress, the hose are Argyll top hose from the Hawick Hose company, I'm also wearing my Sgian Dubh, and my Inverness Cape. The shoes I have on are called Ghillie Brogues there is always debate about these, I find that I do not wear them every day but sometimes they just finish off an outfit. I had just come home from work that day.
Here is another Day wear look this time without the waistcoat or facial hair, I'm wearing a Brown Harris Tweed Argyll with a Green with Blue Lambswool tie, a Casual Kilt belt that I made, my Isle of Skye Kilt again, Sporran is an L&M daywear leather sporran without tassels. The hose are again from the Hawick Hose Company, the garter ties were bought through the Scottish Tartan Museum, I find these far more comfortable than elastic garters, the shoes are normal dress shoes the sgian dubh is from the Sgian Dubh Company.
In this photo it's the Gordon Highlanders MoD replica from What Price Glory, a wonderful kilt for Canadian Winters. I'm also wearing my Grey Braemar Jacket with waistcoat again, I find this Jacket and waistcoat is about the most versatile you could ask for, I'm wearing a Bottle Green tie, this one is from Lochcarron, the Sporran is again the L&M, the hose are Hawick hose bottle green with checks of red and blue on the top, and the garter ties were an ebay buy, the sgain dubh is again from the Sgian Dubh Company.

Formal Wear, Black Tie
Here I'm wearing the Prince Charlie Jacket, with what is known as a Rouche tie, these have had their 15 minutes of fame and are now looked askance at, I add it here for posterities sake more than anything else, I'm also wearing a Sealskin sporran that would be appropriate for Formal wear unless of course you are in the USA. On top of all that I'm wearing Argyll hose Ghillie Brogues and a dress sgian dubh.
This is basically the same outfit as above except for the more common, and approved of bow tie, and I am also wearing buckle brogues instead of the Ghillie Brogues.
Again almost the same outfit, this time I was asked by my brother to wear the Prince Charlie for my nieces Christening as it was during the day, I was reticent to do so, however it was a special request. Here I'm wearing my Maple Leaf Tartan, Off White Hose , tartan flashes, a bow tie, a dress sgian dubh, regular dress shoes, the sporrran I wore was a Semi Dress day wear fur covered sporran.

Formal Wear White Tie
Me in my Montrose Doublet, with my MacDonald of Sleat tartan Kilt, diced hose, my L&M Sealskin Sporrran, Dress Sgian Dubh, Jabot and cuffs, and Buckle Brogues, the Claymore is optional. The Belt around the Montrose is a Dress belt with Clan Crest Dress Buckle
Basically the same outfit without the Claymore and with a different kilt, this time my Graham of Mentieth.
Same look different Kilt, I do believe that with Diced hose you do not have to match them with your kilt.

You should definitely grow it back!... It looks good. It gives your face, specifically your chin, definition. I am also among the ranks of those who lack a strong jawline. I too go between being cleanly shaven and not. So far all the photos I've posted of myself here have been the latter... But the Vandyck really brings out your features.

Self-edit: Here is also a handy beard-type chart if you want to try something new. It's really quite something!

I'm willing to be the farm that that is the first time the words "volksmarch" and "hooters" have ever been used in the same sentence.
Why, a child of five could understand this. Quick -- someone fetch me a child of five!

But I'll bet the situation has occurred many times though. Go do your walk, then stop for a beer.

Here is a bit of "cheating" The Jacket is a Braemer, (Argyle with Prince Charlie sleeves), a 5 button vest, an old style formal shirt (boiled front but "soft" collar, black tie and fly plaid. This was worn to a "black tie" event, and got no adverse comments.
