Hatred is destructive and a terrible flaw of mankind.

Hatred for no good reason...is just plain stupid...dangerous and above all...very sad.

I have a friend whose surname is "Campbell". I once asked him if he ever runs across the anti-Campbell thing. He said that it happens not everyday, but perhaps once per year. Whether John was being cute does not change the fact that he is encourage a type of bigotry. Would we think it was cute if he refused to shake hands, as part of some inside joke, with a relative who happens to be member of a visible minority?

It is very stupid to think that one is engaged in a feud with the Campbells. The Glencoe massacre happened in 1692. In 1692, there were likely alot of people with the surname Campbell. However of all the Campbells alive in 1692, few actually killed a MacDonald. It is not like all the Campbells went into the Glencoe. The Campbells at Glencoe were the kings soldiers and were not acting on behalf of their clan or their chieftian. Most people with the surname Campbell are not descendants of the Campbells who were at Glencoe. How can guilt be attributed to anyone with the surname Campbell?

Ancestors of mine at who were adults in 1692 would be great great great great great great grandparents (or greater), with whom I share 1/128 DNA (or less) -- that's not even one full chromozone. Not enough common blood to support a blood feud.

Lastly, there are likely a lot of people with surnames other than Campbell who had a Campbell ancestor at Glencoe. If one is going to be silly enough to have this hatred, it should be targetted at the right people.

Just throwing that out to be poked at or stepped in.
I, for one ( along with a lot of other BCers) wouldn't shake the hand of this particular Gordo Campbell. As Wompet suspects, I think it likely that the lad just picked a more polite way of puttting his refusal, to be used by gordo.

We have to remember the lad is 13 and flexing his muscles. We all tease the Campbells and he took it pretty far.

I've heard a little needling while carrying the Clan Campbell banner, but nothing mean spirited.
