There's a great story from Arizona history of when the railroad finally came to the Old Pueblo in the late 1800s. The mayor decided to telegraph His Holiness the Pope to inform him that Tucson, formally of His Catholic Majesty of Spain's possessions in the New World, had entered the modern era.

Some local wags "intercepted" the telegraph and sent the Pope's "reply for him" -- it went something like this:

"The Holy Father sends his congratulations, but begs to ask -- where in the he** is Tucson?"
