As for the HP books YOU GOTTA read them - the HP movies were good - the books are miles ahead !!! Yes it will take a way from your kilt wearing/shopping/making time but it would be time well spent!
Rowling needs to work a bit at her dialog, but otherwise they're fantastic books. The detail was so astounding, you don't notice the book's few flaws.
Jackson and Del Toro are doing the new Hobbit movie, currently set for 2010. There are even rumors that Chris Lee will do the voice-over for Smaug. (god, I need to re-read The Hobbit; I can't spell that name to save my life!)
For the level of Tolkiens writing, I really should have read it more, but as a young, hectic teen, I have no time! I must read all the classics! Bring on the Tolkien, Salvatore, Clarke, Asimov, Hawking, etc.!
