Dressing down or up?

The more traditional the kilt(not a great kilt) the easier it is to adapt in whichever way you want to go.

I'll agree with jock here, the traditional kilt is the easiest to dress at different levels, from uber-casual to white tie formal. It's all in the accessories.

Some of the more casual kilts can still be dressed all the way down, but may not look right if you get real formal. It depends on the kilt.

For the most part, unless someone gets really close and feels your kilt (the weight, examines the depth of the pleats, etc), most folks are unlikely to know whether it's a full 8 yd tank or a 5- yd semi-trad.

The dressing up or down is about 95% in the accountrments: sporran, hose, belt, jacket, etc. Look at McMurdo; same kilt, totally different looks depending on topper and sporran.

But, on another note, if you're popping for a special mill run of the cloth, why not go ahead and get a tank made in it anyway? It'll last forever--well, maybe not forever, but it'll likely outlast all of us!

You all have been great at answering my questions. That's is really all I needed to know about dressing up or down. To all of you that has help me my deepest thanks to you all. The pics that you all post was a real help too.

Know to X Marksthescot, Thank very much for have a forum like this for us new people to the kilt buying world. This is the best forum I have ever been on. The people on here are well inform and pleasant to chat with.

Now that's enough of the brown nosing.

I couldn't live with myself wearing a Celtic Jersey, I think my Dad would thump me to within an inch of my life if he ever saw it. Besides which I think the first ever case of Spontaneous Combustion in Glasgow was from a Rangers fan accidentally putting on a Celtic Jersey that a friend handed him in the dark after a few pints just to see what would happen. I certainly would not want that happening to me.
