I Thought I Could Do It...

So, I thought I could get away with wearing a kilt an entire day without any comments from strangers regarding whether or not I am Scottish or if I play the Bagpipes... I was wrong, but it was very amusing.

Today I had to take a 2 hour drive to pick up my girlfriend from Pittsburgh at Midway Airport in Chicago and I decided, since A) I like kilts, B) she likes kilts, C) my new SWK Nightstalker standard came yesterday, and D) that driving in a kilt is sure to not start a commotion (which I don't mind starting really, but, still...), that I would wear the Nightstalker to get her.

After a long and annoying highway drive I finally got her right on time as was scheduled (I couldn't believe it!). As she had to put her luggage in the back seat of my truck, and was having an issue getting the seat to work, I got out and stretched my legs and put it back for her at the arrival pick up pull off area (which confused me as a first timer). As I was about to pull out, one of the pick-up attendants came over and knocked on my window, which scared me half to death because I thought perhaps I was in trouble for parking there too long or some such nonsense. I opened the door and the pleasant lady blurts out "Hey! Do you play the bnagpipes???" to which I had to reply "not much, but I'm working on them slowly on my own."

I was surprised when she told me a story of how her neighbor's son learned how to play pipes on his own on the South Side of Chicago. She happened to be a huge fan of pipes and loved seeing a guy kilted somewhere.

One thing I found really amusing was how she told me she noticed I was wearing a kilt (because it was dark and I had a long leather coat on, it's not fully obvious from behind). She told me she looked down and saw my legs, with my dark grey hose only to look up and see a hint of pleats under the coat to which she told me she thought "O that's not a SKIRT that's a guy in a KILT!"

It made for a very unexpected and very amusing little impromptu chat. That seems to happen a lot to us kilties doesn't it?

Well Jock, if you'd come visit us here in the colonies, I bet we could arrange one of these kind of experiences for you, with no advanced planning or trouble at all !

My kids get a big kick out of it. I have had similar things happen in several places.

Walked out of Sam's Club yesterday and was asked by one of their staff where I got my kilt as he really wanted one. Gave him Jerry's (Stillwater Kilts) website. That was my only comment after a full day wearing and in a number of public places.

When I went down to pick up my new kilt from Barb, earlier on this week, I was on the road for 10 hours, didn't get a comment anywhere, in my experience the more you wear it the more natural it becomes, people sense that it's normal for you, and therefore they don't say anything about it.

Jock, you have officially become "local color." Embrace it.
Why, a child of five could understand this. Quick -- someone fetch me a child of five!
