    Newbie board

The "Off Topic" board does not add to your count when you post there because it does not contribute to kilts. I agree with this very much, and would like to suggest to take it to another level. I think posting in the Newbie board should not add to your count either. 1) because it does not contribute to kilts and 2) because I feel people copy-and-paste greetings to inflate their count.

Don't get me wrong, I think it is important to welcome our new members and encourage them to join in, but so often I see people who go into the threads and paste a generic greeting that seems like a thin veneer of sincerity. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that doesn't seem like a real greeting. I've gone into Newbie threads where the newcomers ask questions and whatnot, only to be followed up by dozens of members stating their location and a welcome message.

I'm not singling anybody out at all, I just feel like we should keep post counts on kilt-related topics, not drive-by postings.

I banned myself from posting in the newbie threads for a while back when I was trying to keep my number of posts per day average down. It did make a difference. I've un-banned myself from those threads, but I wish post numbers and counting played a smaller role on X Marks.

Perhaps I should bann myself from posting in newbie threads again.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Notice what you notice. Not sure its a problem since post counts don't mean much.

My choice is to read the newbie posts but only to reply if I have something to say to them relating to their introductory post..."Hey, I got drunk in your town once!" Etc.

It's my understanding that posts in the newbie section don't add to your post count.

Yup, what Colin said. He may be retired but he seems to have retained his faculties.

I generally only post a "hello" in threads that have less than ten or so replies. And as far as I can tell if the OP had a question it has usually been answered by the time I get there.

What the heck are you saying Ron? You mean there's no free steak knives when you hit 3,000 posts?

I'm guilty of a simple "welcome to the forum from blah, blah, blah". I feel even a simple welcome is better than no welcome at all. I don't copy and paste, though. Each and every letter is typed by hand.

The newbie threads seem to go on for ever, the same ones cropping up day after day in so-called "new posts". Content being minimal, I don't usually bother to look, and quite agree with Beloitpiper that copy-pasted "welcomes" have little value.
