    Hudson River plane crash

I just turned on the TV to get the news, and saw a report announcing that no one was killed - no one, apparently, even badly hurt when a commercial airliner went down in the Hudson River shortly after take off.

Thanks to the crews of the ferries and other boats most of the people were taken off from the plane without even getting wet. Good thing too - those that did get wet do have hypothermia.

That is quite something - with most of the financial news these days being bad - an against all the odds escape really rather puts things in perspective.

    Crisis? Smisis!!

The plane took off from LaGuardia and hit a flock of Canada geese, which clogged and shut down both engines. Excellent pilot and a perfect ditching...!

I think it's quite something to see that an emergency ditch into the water actually works. I've never seen a plane go down in the water and have it work out well. I guess I'll pay more attention next time they tell me where to find my flotation device.

    Regards,
    Rex.

Glad for the safety of all the people, sad for the demise of the geese.

Absolutely amazing. 150 people are alive today because of the skill and steely nerve of the flight crew.

You obviously have never dealt with Canadian Geese. (Or Canada Geese as they are called in some parts.)

They can be downright evil. We should ship them to war zones instead of troops. Where I used to live, one attacked a Horse Cop. Another person a few years earlier got to close to one and wound up blind.

They are like an army, they find water, and it becomes theirs. They can fight 1 on 1, or have an entire flock turn on you. They have no fear.

    Canada geese?

There are so many in Poole Park they make the grass nasty and the water in the lake all green.

They are big birds - but I doubt they suffered if some went into the engines - it must have been quick, one minute flying and five seconds later thoroughly squashed.

Bird strike would explain why both engines failed.

My Dad saw many planes come in to land after sorties over Germany and on patrol around England when he was in the RAF in WWII. Some planes crashed terribly and the crews walked away with barely a scratch, sometimes there was a seemingly small accident, but it would be enough to kill a man.

He used to say 'If your number isn't up then you can walk away from any wreck.' It seems that today the crew and passengers of that plane were not on the list of those to die.

It must be a really strange experience to come through something like that, and I wonder how they will be affected by it.

It would be interesting to find them all a year from now and see what has happened to them after today, if they have gone on with their lives as before or decided that they would change something - or everything as a result of the experience of surviving what could have been a disaster.
